Antisana: The Wildest Volcano Near Quito

At 5,704 m, Antisana is Ecuador's fourth-highest volcano — but its real significance is ecological, not just altitudinal. Its slopes and surrounding páramo form a 120,000-hectare ecological reserve (Reserva Ecológica Antisana) that supplies drinking water to Quito and shelters one of the most stable Andean condor populations in the country.

Why Antisana Matters

Between 1990 and 2010, the reserve was closed to cattle grazing, allowing the páramo grasslands to recover. Today it hosts 20 to 25 resident Andean condors (Vultur gryphus), plus spectacled bears, mountain tapirs, Andean foxes, and the endemic Andean carunculated caracara.

The Perfect Day-Trip Itinerary

07:00 — Depart Quito by private 4×4. Coffee stop in Píntag village (2,850 m).

08:30 — Ranger station registration, then 40 min on gravel road climbing to 3,900 m.

09:15 — First condor lookout above Laguna de la Mica. Bring binoculars — condors glide the thermals rising off the lake between 09:00 and 12:00.

10:30 — Short 1.5 km walk to the second lookout with 360° views of Antisana's glacier cone.

12:30 — Picnic lunch by the lake. Trout fishing available May–October.

14:00 — Return via a different route through the páramo of Micacocha with wild deer sightings.

17:00 — Arrive back in Quito.

What Makes It Special

Unlike the more touristed Cotopaxi National Park, Antisana receives fewer than 30,000 visitors a year. The reserve enforces a strict day-use limit and has no restaurants, souvenir shops or paved roads inside. What you get is 100% pristine páramo — grass tussocks, cushion plants, mineral lakes and the silence of high-altitude wind.

Practical Notes

- Altitude: viewpoints 3,900–4,300 m. Sleep in Quito (2,850 m) beforehand. - Access: 4×4 required for the last 12 km of gravel road. - Entrance fee: free (ranger registration required). - Best months: June–September for peak-visibility mornings; November–April for greener páramo.
