Isabela Island: The Wild Heart of Galápagos

Isabela is the largest island in the archipelago at 4,588 km² — over 60% of the total Galápagos landmass. Six shield volcanoes rise from a single seahorse-shaped landmass: Ecuador, Wolf, Darwin, Alcedo, Sierra Negra and Cerro Azul. Five of them remain geologically active, making Isabela the wildest and least developed of the inhabited islands.

Puerto Villamil: The Village at the Edge of the World

Home to roughly 2,200 residents, Puerto Villamil is a sandy-street village that trades speed for authenticity. Wooden hammock bars replace pavement, marine iguanas cross the road unhurried, and pelicans wait patiently at the fish market. Its flamingo lagoon — a two-minute walk from the main square — is the largest coastal lagoon system in Galápagos.

Three Must-Do Experiences

1. Sierra Negra Volcano hike. A 16 km round trip along the 7.2 × 9.3 km caldera rim, the second-largest active caldera on Earth. The trail crosses the parasitic Volcán Chico with steam vents still hissing after the 2018 eruption. Certified guide mandatory.

2. Los Túneles snorkel tour. A 45-minute boat ride from the pier reaches lava-arch formations sculpted by cooling flows meeting seawater. Swim beside white-tip reef sharks, green sea turtles, seahorses and — with luck — Galápagos penguins.

3. Wall of Tears bike ride. A 5 km flat trail from town through mangroves and beaches to the 100 × 7 × 3 m basalt wall, built stone by stone by penal-colony prisoners between 1946 and 1959. The lookout above rewards the climb with a panorama of every volcano.

Unique Fauna You Won't Find Elsewhere

Isabela is the only place on Earth where the Galápagos penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus) breeds regularly north of the equator, and the only home of the flightless cormorant (Nannopterum harrisi). Five endemic subspecies of giant tortoise still roam its highland shield calderas — one per volcano, isolated from each other for hundreds of thousands of years.
