Travel south from Quito along the scenic Avenue of the Volcanoes into Cotopaxi National Park. Explore the Interpretation Center, observe wild horses and páramo flora, and undertake the exciting hike from the parking area at 4,500 m (14,764 ft) up to the José Rivas Mountain Refuge at 4,800 m (15,748 ft), with optional extension toward the glacier viewpoint depending on weather and group physical condition.

Day 1 – Full Day – Avenue Of The Volcanoes & Cotopaxi Refuge Hike

Depart early from Quito traveling south on the Pan-American Highway through the Avenue of Volcanoes.
Enter Cotopaxi National Park, visiting the Interpretation Center and panoramic páramo grasslands.
Drive up to the parking lot at 4,500 m and begin the memorable hike up volcanic ash scree to José Rivas Refuge at 4,800 m.
After taking in breathtaking views and warming up at the refuge, descend and visit Limpiopungo Lagoon before enjoying an included lunch and returning to Quito.
