Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, the Galapagos Islands are located 603 miles off the coast of mainland Ecuador and are composed of 13 major volcanic islands, 6 smaller islands, and over 100 islets and rocks.

98% of the archipelago's territory is part of the protected Galapagos National Park, preserving one of the world's most pristine marine and terrestrial ecosystems, while only 2% is inhabited by local communities.

The "Enchanted Islands" are the result of intense tectonic and volcanic activity over a geological hotspot. Scientists estimate the formation of the oldest islands began over 5 million years ago, while younger islands like Isabela and Fernandina continue to be actively formed by volcanic eruptions.

Endemic Biodiversity & Conservation

Over 2,900 marine species have been scientifically recorded in the Galapagos Marine Reserve, of which 18.2% are strictly endemic.

According to UNESCO records, more than 45 endemic bird species, 42 reptiles, 15 mammals, and 79 fish species coexist harmoniously in this protected biosphere. The archipelago was the historical home of Lonesome George, the legendary last surviving giant tortoise of Pinta Island. Today, meticulous breeding and conservation programs maintain more than 95% of the original biodiversity recorded by Charles Darwin in 1835.
