Baños de Agua Santa: Ecuador's Adventure Capital

Nestled at 1,820 m on the eastern flank of the Andes, Baños de Agua Santa sits where three worlds meet: the páramo, the cloud forest and the Amazon basin. Its microclimate produces more than 60 waterfalls within 20 km, thermal springs fed by the active Tungurahua volcano (5,023 m), and Ecuador's densest cluster of adventure-sport operators.

The Ruta de las Cascadas

The 61 km road east of town toward Puyo drops 1,000 m in altitude while crossing 18 named waterfalls. The classic self-guided way is by bicycle (USD 6/day rentals in town) with a return by cargo pickup for USD 5. Highlights:

- Km 8 — Agoyán: the tallest cataract on the route, 61 m. - Km 12 — Manto de la Novia: a 40 m bridal-veil twin-fall reached by cable car (tarabita). - Km 17 — Pailón del Diablo: the show-stopper.

The Pailón del Diablo (Devil's Cauldron)

An 80 m plunge of the Río Verde into a natural basin so misty and thunderous locals nicknamed it the Devil's Cauldron. From the parking lot on the Río Verde side, a 15-min downhill trail reaches a viewing bridge; a narrow stone passage lets you scramble directly behind the falls (wear waterproof jacket — you will get soaked). Entry USD 2 per person.

In 2021 a second access opened on the opposite Isla side, with a longer hike and a suspension footbridge over the cauldron itself. Both are worth the visit if time allows.

Casa del Árbol: The Swing at the End of the World

10 km above town at 2,660 m, a wooden treehouse holds a rustic swing that flies out over a cliff facing the Tungurahua volcano. On clear mornings you rock through the sky with the smoking crater directly in view. USD 2 entry, open 07:00–17:00. Come at sunrise for the sea of clouds below.

Adventure Sports

- White-water rafting (Class III–IV) on the Pastaza river, USD 30/half day. - Canopy zipline — the San Martín line crosses the Río Pastaza gorge, 400 m long. - Canyoning at Cascada Chamana, 4 rappels between 8 and 40 m. - Puenting — bridge jumping from the 100 m San Francisco bridge over the gorge.

The Thermal Baths

Baños's namesake pools (Piscinas de la Virgen, USD 3) are heated by the Tungurahua volcano's magmatic system. Best visited at night (18:00–22:00) when the pools are lit and the mountain air cools the surrounding town.
