The Avenue of the Volcanoes: Complete Expedition Guide

Discovering Humboldt’s Legendary Andean Route

For adventure lovers, The Avenue of the Volcanoes is the quintessential Andean journey. Along this spectacular corridor, travelers experience world-class mountain climbing, hiking, cycling, camping, and horseback riding through untouched highland paramo ecosystems.

This route was famously named by the German naturalist and geographer Alexander von Humboldt in the early 19th century, inspired by the symmetric alignment of colossal active and dormant snow-capped peaks stretching over 200 miles across the Ecuadorian Andes.

Iconic Volcanic Summits Along the Corridor:

1. Chimborazo Volcano (20,564 ft / 6,268 m) The highest summit in Ecuador and the **closest point on Earth to the Sun** (furthest from Earth's center due to the equatorial bulge). Located within the *Chimborazo Fauna Production Reserve*, its glacier slopes are home to wild herds of vicuñas, Andean wolves, and rare paramo flora.

2. Cotopaxi Volcano (19,347 ft / 5,897 m) The highest active volcano in the world and an emblem of Ecuador. Snow and glacial ice crown its classic symmetrical cone. The hike to the **José Rivas Refuge (15,958 ft / 4,864 m)** and the loop trail around **Limpiopungo Lake** provide dramatic views of wild horses, caracara birds, and mirror-like reflections.

3. Quilotoa Crater Lake (12,841 ft / 3,914 m) A breathtaking emerald-turquoise volcanic caldera formed by a massive eruption 800 years ago. Hikers can trek along the rim or descend into the crater to kayak on mineral-rich waters surrounded by sheer 400-meter cliffs.

4. Antisana Volcano & La Mica Lagoon (18,713 ft / 5,704 m) Home to the largest glacier mass in Ecuador, fed by moisture rising from the Amazon. A premier high-altitude reserve for spotting the endangered Andean Condor in flight.

5. Tungurahua Volcano & Baños de Agua Santa (16,479 ft / 5,023 m) Known ancestrally as the *"Throat of Fire"*, Tungurahua towers over the lush cloud forest gateway to the Amazon. The nearby Route of the Waterfalls features the thunderous **Pailón del Diablo** and relaxing thermal hot springs.
