The Architectural & Natural Masterpiece of Southern Ecuador
Known as the Athens of Ecuador, Cuenca is the country's cultural and intellectual heart. Its historic center was declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1999 for its French and Spanish colonial architecture, wrought-iron balconies, and cobblestone promenades along the Tomebamba River.
Highlights of Cuenca & Cajas:
1. The New Cathedral (Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción) Its iconic sky-blue and white ceramic domes imported from Czechoslovakia define the city's skyline. Built with local pink marble from nearby quarries.
2. The Panama Hat Weaving Tradition (Sombrero de Paja Toquilla) Contrary to its popular name, the famous Panama hat originated entirely in Ecuador and is recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Visit artisan workshops in Cuenca to witness master weavers crafting super-fine hats from Toquilla palm straw.
3. Cajas National Park (Parque Nacional Cajas) Located just 30 minutes from Cuenca at altitudes ranging from 10,000 to 14,600 feet (3,100 - 4,450 m). This high-altitude tundra reserve encompasses over **230 glacial lakes and lagoons**, ancient paper-tree forests (Polylepis), wild Andean llamas, and trout-filled mountain rivers.
4. Ingapirca Inca Ruins The largest and most important Incan archaeological site in Ecuador, featuring the elliptical *Temple of the Sun* constructed with chiseled mortarless stone masonry.
