The First UNESCO World Cultural Heritage City

In 1978, UNESCO inaugurated its prestigious World Cultural Heritage list, and Quito, Ecuador was officially designated as City #1, owing to the largest, most authentic, and best-preserved historic center in the Americas.

Perched in a high Andean volcanic valley at 2,850 meters (9,350 ft) above sea level, Quito seamlessly bridges centuries of indigenous pre-Inca history, monumental Spanish Baroque art, and a vibrant modern culinary scene.

Iconic Architectural & Cultural Masterpieces:

1. Church of La Compañía de Jesús (The Golden Temple)

Recognized as the crowning achievement of the Spanish-American Baroque. Sculpted by indigenous and European artisans over 160 years, its interior is entirely cloaked in over seven tons of pure 23-carat gold leaf decorating vaulted ceilings, twisted Solomonic columns, and ornate altarpieces.

2. Plaza and Convent of San Francisco

The largest historical religious architectural complex in Latin America, spanning nearly three full hectares. It preserves over 3,500 priceless masterpieces of colonial painting and wood carving produced by the celebrated Quito School of Art (Escuela Quiteña).

3. Basílica del Voto Nacional

The most imposing Neo-Gothic temple in the Americas. Its spires rise 115 meters (377 ft), offering breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of Quito's historic skyline and surrounding snow-capped Andean volcanoes (Pichincha, Cotopaxi, and Cayambe).

Architectural Curiosity: Unlike European cathedrals adorned with mythical gargoyles, the Basilica features stone-carved gargoyles celebrating Ecuador's native animals—giant tortoises, marine iguanas, pumas, and Andean condors.

4. The Middle of the World (Latitude 0°0'0")

Located just 30 minutes north of the colonial district, this equatorial valley is where 18th-century French and Spanish astronomers measured the circumference of the globe. At the nearby Intiñan Solar Museum, stand with one foot in the Northern Hemisphere and one in the Southern Hemisphere while testing equatorial gravitational phenomena.

Frequently Asked Questions

Expert travel answers & verified destination planning insights

Q1.Can I see native wildlife inside Quito city?

No. Quito is a historic cultural metropolis, recognized for its colonial architecture, churches, museums, and gastronomy. While its Neo-Gothic Basilica gargoyles artistically depict Ecuadorian animals (turtles, iguanas, condors), real native wildlife is strictly protected in natural reserves outside the city. To see wild Andean condors and vicuñas, we organize day trips to Antisana Ecological Reserve or Cotopaxi National Park; to see exotic hummingbirds and toucans, we visit Mindo Cloud Forest.

Q2.How should I handle the high altitude in Quito (2,850 m / 9,350 ft)?

Quito sits at 2,850 meters. We recommend taking Day 1 at a relaxed pace, drinking plenty of water, avoiding heavy meals or excessive alcohol, and enjoying traditional Andean herbal infusions such as sunfo or coca tea. Our private vehicles ensure you never have to strain walking up steep hills.

Q3.What is the difference between Mitad del Mundo and Intiñan Solar Museum?

The historical Mitad del Mundo monument commemorates the 18th-century French Geodesic Mission that calculated the curvature of the Earth. Just 200 meters away, the Intiñan Solar Museum sits on the exact GPS-verified latitude 0°0'0", where visitors experience interactive physical demonstrations like egg balancing on a nail and water Coriolis drainage effects.

Q4.Can Vermilion organize an express Quito tour if I arrive today or want to travel tomorrow?

Yes! We specialize in express, last-minute private itineraries. If you want to travel tomorrow, our local team in Quito has private bilingual guides, sanitized luxury vehicles, and museum entrance permits ready in less than 24 hours.
